Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Five hundred of our talented athletes and their family members celebrated another outstanding year of sporting achievement at Hunter Sports High at our 21st annual TSP Sports Awards Presentation Night on 13 November.

Year 10 student Kirsty Fenton claimed the 2019 Sportsperson of the Year Award after a stellar year in her chosen sport of football. At school level, Kirsty was a key member of the Open Girls team who made the State Final of the PUMA Cup and was also selected in the Hunter Region and NSW CHS school representative teams. At club level, she is in her fifth year as a member of the Newcastle JETS Academy. This year she was in the JETS U19 women’s team and has recently become a train-on member of the JETS W-League team. At an international level, Kirsty has developed herself into a key starting player for the U16 Junior Matildas National team. In 2019 she attended seven national team camps and three international tours throughout Asia, playing in World Cup qualifying games against the likes of Japan, Thailand, Bangladesh and North Korea.

Congratulations to Kirsty on her amazing achievements this year! Congratulations also go to the 11 other Sportsperson of the Month winners who were tough competition for Kirsty after outstanding achievements throughout the year in their chosen sports, and to the many other students who were recognised on the night.

Special thanks to guest speakers Lawrie McKinna (Newcastle JETS CEO) and Roger Davis (President of the NSW Sports High Schools Association) who shared their stories and insights into elite sport and the great opportunities that lie ahead for our sporting students.

Congratulations also to the following students who received major awards on the night and to all students who came along to support their teammates:

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

Duke of Edinburgh International Award

Hunter Sports High School is pleased to be introducing The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as a sport option for students currently in Year 9 & 10. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an internationally recognised program for young people, building their skills to equip them for life and work. By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development. It encourages participants to set personal goals and achieve them. Along the way, students learn about important qualities such responsibility, trust and they improve their ability to plan and organise themselves. Participants choose their own activities and set their own goals within four general areas:

Adventurous Journey: to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery

Service: Volunteering their time to understand the benefits of service to the community

Skills: to encourage the development of personal interests and practical skills.

Physical Recreation: to encourage participation in physical recreation and improvement of performance

Each challenge requires a special dedication, both physical and mental. Success in the Award Program comes through a conscious decision to accept and take up the challenges and recognises individual goal setting and self-improvement through persistence and achievement. Students can start the Duke of Edinburgh Program in Year 9 or 10 at the Bronze level. The school will provide students with all the training that is required and organise/run the expeditions, while students will be responsible for organising the completion of the other sections. The school will advise students and suggest activities that they may wish to undertake. At the completion of the Bronze level, students will be able to go on and complete the Silver and Gold levels at the school. All expeditions (adventurous journeys) involve hiking/bushwalking and are organised and supervised by teachers. Students are required to undertake compulsory training for the Bronze Award and expeditions as part of regular school sport.

For more information regarding the Duke of Edinburgh Program, or if you wish to register your student for the program, see the link below or contact Mr Tait via the school office or by email at jason.tait@det.nsw.edu.au

Just Turn Up! Attendance Campaign

JUST TURN UP! SCHOOL ATTENDANCE CAMPAIGN

Our local Waiyarang Community of Schools have been working together to improve school attendance across our primary and high schools, including Wiripaang, Windale and Mt Hutton Primary Schools and also here at Hunter Sports High. Today we are proud to launch our 'Just Turn Up' campaign - the result of collaboration between our four local schools and designed to encourage our students to 'just turn up'!

Regular attendance at school is essential to assist students to maximise their potential. Schools, in partnership with parents, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students and we hope this campaign helps to deliver this important message to our students and wider school community.

This week we will focus on 'turning up your motivation' - attending school every day, setting goals and achieving success. We'll be talking to students about attendance and reinforcing this message around the school. We look forward to joining with students and staff from our Community of Schools in the weeks ahead to celebrate the launch of this important campaign. Keep an eye out for our Just Turn Up messages around the local community and please join us in encouraging your child to JUST TURN UP - MISSING SCHOOL MEANS MISSING OUT!

Scholarship Awarded to Big Picture Student

Congratulations to Year 9 Big Picture student Chelsea Palmer who was awarded a $20,000 scholarship at the Public Education Foundation's annual Proudly Public Awards Ceremony held at Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday 15 May.

The Harding Miller scholarship provides practical support to girls who have high academic potential and are experiencing hardship. The scholarships lift the educational outcomes and career aspirations of high school girls in public schools across Australia.

Congratulations to Chelsea on this outstanding achievement. She is a hard-working and deserving student who will no doubt continue to maximise her potential with this financial support. Chelsea was nominated for the scholarship by Hunter Sports High's Youth Worker Keira and Big Picture Advisor Mr Staley whose support and encouragement have had a huge impact on Chelsea.

Chelsea has already received a new computer to help with her studies and will soon commence tutoring in English, maths and science. The scholarship will also help with her travel costs to and from school as well as some new uniform items. Along with her Big Picture classmates, Chelsea will be heading to Newcastle Uni later this term to check out the Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) Building, an excursion brought about by her interest in technology and gaming that will allow her to explore potential university pathways for her future study. Chelsea will report back to the scholarship providers to let them know how she's using her funds, planning for her future, and the extremely positive impact it has already had on her education.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

The redevelopment of Hunter Sports High School continues at a rapid pace. The $45.1 million project will see Hunter Sports High School become one of the most modern schools in the state. Its design has been influenced by the new ways of teaching and learning that will help prepare our students for the jobs of the future.

Construction of the new school commenced in April 2017 and is on track to be completed early in 2019. The first stage of the project, the new school hall (S Block) has been handed over to the school and is temporarily housing 14 learning spaces while the next stage of demolition and construction takes place. Mid-way through 2018 we'll be filling the classrooms and corridors of this new building (T Block) and by the start of the next school year the new school will be very close to completion. Very exciting times for Hunter Sports High!

The Department of Education released the following information about the school upgrade:

"The Department of Education (DoE) is planning the redevelopment of Hunter Sports High School that will provide suitable facilities for the delivery of secondary and elite sports programs through a staged redevelopment of the school.

The purpose of the project is to replace the existing buildings on site which have reached the end of their economic life with new state of the art education facilities incorporating 21st Century learning principles to meet the requirements of a 5-stream high school.

The Hunter Sports High School Redevelopment incorporates the construction of three new buildings:

Block S:

A school hall, known as a Movement Complex, incorporating a large area for assemblies/presentations, canteen, weights gym and various store rooms and amenities.

Block T:

A two and three-storey building incorporating the school's front reception and administration, staff offices, student and staff amenities, general classrooms and specialist classrooms such as Food Technology kitchens, wood and metalwork workshops, science laboratories and Special Education facilities.

Block U:

A single-storey building incorporating the school library (known as the information hub), student amenities, student welfare function (Minimbah Room and Youth Centre) and specialist learning areas such as the Big Picture Academy, Visual and Performing Arts.

Updates and further information about the project will be published in HSHS school newsletters, on our Facebook page and on this website. Please note that there is very limited visitor parking throughout the construction phase. Only authorised vehicles (with special access passes) will be able to enter the site for Support Unit transport. Please be mindful of these changes.

Hunter Sports High celebrated another outstanding year of sporting achievement with our Talented Sports Program athletes and their families at our TSP Presentation Night at Wests Leagues Club on Wednesday 15th November.

Erin Cleaver was announced as our Sportsperson of the Year for the second year in a row after her outstanding silver medal-winning performance at the World Para Athletics Championships in London earlier this year.

Our Director of Sport, Mr Pascoe, outlined some of the impressive statistics from another successful year for the Talented Sports Program. "We are State Champions in two team sports this year, and on top of that we have also come second, third or fourth in nine other team competitions, making one third of our teams top four finishers in statewide knockout tournaments – an incredible effort and a true reflection of the outstanding work that goes on in our sports programs."

On an individual level Hunter Sports High's Talented Sports Program has assisted the development of 344 students across 13 sport programs, we've had 98 Hunter region representatives, 54 NSW representatives and 11 students reached the ultimate goal of being selected in national teams, including one in an Italian softball team.
