Bring Your Own Device Procedures

Hunter Sports High School values the rich learning experiences integrated interactions with technology brings. The promotion and advancement of this integration is core to the school's educational philosophies. By facilitating Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Hunter Sports High School empowers its students and gives them direct involvement in the way they use technology in their learning.

Objectives

• To facilitate and promote the ability of all students to bring a digital device to school in Years 7 - 12 for use in their education.
• To provide a safe environment for students to further Objective 1.
• To ensure a minimum standard of device compatibility.
• To enable students to use technology to further their learning, independently and in structured lessons.
• To provide a basis on which Hunter Sports High School teachers can continue to tailor lesson delivery so that students can use their devices in class toward specific learning outcomes.

Actions

a) Students and Parents/Carers

• All students in Year 7 to Year 12 are expected to bring a learning device that is fully charged to school each day.
• All other students not specifically mentioned are permitted to bring a computing device to school each day.
• Any/all students who bring a learning device to school for use in class and/or connect to the schools Wi-Fi must read and follow all set procedures and policy.
• Student learning devices should be as per the Device Specifications set by the school.
• Devices such as mobile phones are not considered a suitable learning device under this BYOD policy however may be used as a learning tool at the discretion and guidance of the teacher.
• Any theft, damage or misuse will be solely the responsibility of the student.
• Students requiring an alternate device which does not meet the specifications set must seek approval from the school.
• Students must follow teachers directions as to the appropriate use of their devices during class time.
• Students must only connect their devices to the school wireless network whilst at school. Students are not permitted to use mobile data or hotspots whilst at school.

b) Teachers

• Teachers will encourage and facilitate the use of learning devices in their lessons/classroom environments. It should be noted however that the timing and use of all devices is at the discretion of the teacher.
• Teachers will follow standard discipline procedures in the event a student fails to bring their device, in the same manner as a student failing to bring any other required material to class.
• Students who use their device inappropriately may be disciplined in accordance with the schools Wellbeing and Discipline Procedures.

c) Hunter Sports High School

• Provide the following information to all families
• Access to The HSHS BYOD Policy (via website)
• Access to Digital devices and online services policy (via website)
• Provide a wireless network with filtered internet connection to which students may connect their BYOD program device.
• Provide support to assist students with first bringing their device to school and establishing a network connection.
• Provide students with support around the use of software and applications applicable to the courses/classes/subjects in which the students are participating.
• HSHS is not responsible for the loss, damage, theft, maintenance or repair of any student owned device.

d) Equity

• The school encourages any parent/carers to contact the school in the case of not being able to provide a learning device due to financial or other reasons.
• The school will consider all short- and long-term loan device applications with genuine financial hardship. Approved applications will be dependent on availability of resources. Learning Device procedures. These devices will be booked out under the student’s name and returned at the conclusion of allocated agreement. In all other cases, the devices must be returned to the school when a student’s either signs out permanently or at the end of a school year. These devices are solely the responsibility of the student and any breakage, loss or damage to the devices will be the responsibility of the student and their parent/carer.

• If you believe you are unable to provide a device that meets the specification:

a. Make an application in writing to the Principal and complete an application for a short or long term learning device.

b. The school will liaise with you, your child and his teachers to identify the most appropriate way to address the issue and ensure they have appropriate access to the technological resources of their peers.
