Attendance Procedures

Regular attendance at school is essential if students are to maximise their potential. Schools in partnership with parents, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff, as a part of their duty of care, monitor part or whole day absences.

Attendance Strategy Procedures

Student's Responsibility:

As members of Hunter Sports High School students must agree to:

• Be punctual to school
• Be punctual to all classes
• Attend school as often as possible
• Attend timetabled classes
• Provide timely notification from parents/caregivers for any absences
• Obtain authorised passes (i.e. early leavers pass, late arrival pass)
• Take responsibility for completion of work missed due to non-attendance

Parent/Caregiver's Responsibility:

A parent/caregiver of a student at Hunter Sports High School should:

• Provide timely notification for their child's absenteeism
• Ensure their child attends school on a regular basis
• Communicate with the school regarding extended periods of absence
• Provide explanations for lateness or early leavers

• Work with the school to support student attendance

Early Leavers:

Should a student need to leave school early they require permission from their parent/carer. Permission from a parent/carer may be communicated to the school in the following manner:

• Sentral Parent Portal – Parents may request an early leavers pass for their child by selecting ‘Absences’ from the home screen and creating a ‘Future Absence’.
• Email - An email to the school E: hunterspt-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au
• Written Note – Providing a written permission note to your child. This note must be handed in to Student Services before commencement of the school day

An early leavers pass will be issued to the student and they are required to show this pass to their teacher when they are due to leave. Students are also required to have the early leavers pass with them when they leave the school grounds.

Late Arrivers:

Students who arrive at school late must attend Student Services on arrival to have their attendance recorded and obtain a Late Slip before going to class.

An explanation for the late arrival should be communicated to the school by a parent/carer within 7 days of each individual occurrence. This may be communicated in the following manner:

• Sentral Parent Portal – Parents may explain a late arrival for their child by selecting ‘Absences’ from the home screen, selecting ‘Unexplained Absence – Requires Explanation’ and completing all fields.
• Email - An email to the school E:  hunterspt-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au
• Written Note – Providing a written note to your child. This note must be handed in to Student Services.

Absence from school:

The school recognises there may be a sound reason why a student may not attend school on a given day. In such cases the student will be recorded as absent and an explanation from a parent/carer is required within 7 days of each individual occurrence.

An explanation for the absence may be communicated to the school by a parent/carer in the following manner:

  • Parents may advise of a known upcoming absence for their child by selecting ‘Absences’ from the home screen and creating a ‘Future Absence’.
  • Parents may explain an absence for their child by selecting ‘Absences’ from the home screen, selecting ‘Unexplained Absence – Requires Explanation’ and completing all fields.

• Email - An email to the school E:  hunterspt-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au

• Written Note – Providing a written note to your child. This note must be handed in to Student Services.
