June 2016 Redevelopment Update

22 March 2016

Hunter Sports High School's binishell was demolished in January this year to make way for a brand new state-of-the-art Movement Complex which will be the first building constructed as part of the school's redevelopment. Our time-lapse cameras captured the demolition process. See how it all happened in this nostalgic clip.

18 February 2016

The demolition of the school's binishell during the Christmas holidays was a major milestone in the redevelopment project and the plans for the new buildings and facilities continue to evolve. Please take a few minutes to have a look at the latest plans for the new school in the video below.

The video below show updated plans for the redevelopment of Hunter Sports High School, including Stage 1 & Stage 2 of the project.

Funds for the construction of Stage 1 have been confirmed and the Department of Education are hoping to secure additional funding for the construction of Stage 2, which is currently being designed in conjunction with Stage 1. As yet there is no guarantee when funding will be secured for the construction of Stage 2, but the design will be ready for when funding does become available.

A Community Forum will be held at Hunter Sports High School on Tuesday 1st December, from 6pm in the school library to discuss the redevelopment and to provide an opportunity for questions and community feedback. Representatives from EJE Architecture and the Department of Public Works will be presenting the latest details of the project. All welcome.

The school redevelopment project is gaining momentum as we head towards the end of the school year. During the recent school holidays it was announced that a local Newcastle architecture practice, EJE Architecture, won the tender and has been awarded the contract as the Head Design Consultants for the project. EJE have extensive experience in the design of education facilities, including most recently, Hunter River Community School, NeWSpace (University of Newcastle city campus) and Newcastle Grammar School, among others. For one of the team members this will be quite a nostalgic experience as he is an ex-student of our school!

The project update below details the steps that have been completed so far and key tasks that will be completed in the coming months, including the development of schematic design, the commencement of the planning approval process and early works demolition on site.

7 August 2015

Further details of the redevelopment were shared with parents and community members at our P&C Meeting on Tuesday 4th August. The redevelopment project is beginning to move a lot more quickly now - the project team is close to finalising the concept design and hope to have this signed off in the very near future.

It has been confirmed that the redevelopment will include a three-storey and a two-storey building, both brand new, as well as a new movement complex. All fields and ovals will remain as they currently are and construction is due to start early next year. The construction of the new buildings will be staged so that students and teachers will experience the least amount of disruption as possible.

The project team is working hard to ensure that the community benefits from the best new facilities possible within the allocated budget and will continue to provide updates as further details are confirmed.

24 July 2015

The school redevelopment is gaining momentum at present with project team meetings recommencing this week. Over the last few months the focus has been on discussions and negotiations with a number of community and sporting organisations including NSW Cricket, AFL, Lake Macquarie Council and the PCYC to ensure that the potential and benefit of the redevelopment is maximised for the school and also the local and wider community.

Despite recent media reports indicating that funding was no longer allocated to the project, the NSW Government has assured their commitment with funding confirmed and allocated from the 2014 NSW State Budget.

More detailed discussion regarding the redevelopment concept design will take place at the P&C Meeting to be held on Tuesday 4th August from 6pm in the HSHS Staff Common Room. Please come along if you are interested in hearing more about the project. It is certainly an exciting time for Hunter Sports High School.
